The Baby Food Diet and Weight Loss

By | January 5, 2020

In this article, the baby food diet and weight loss I’ll be discussing why people including a well-known celebrity promoted it. Furthermore, I will cover if and why it works for weight loss and if there is any science behind this crazy sounding but popular diet.

How did the baby food diet come about?

We can thank or blame Jennifer Anniston for this. It’s rumored that Jennifer dropped seven pounds in a short amount of time. Apparently, it was a recommendation from her personal trainer? Well, you can guess what happened next…

I imagine the baby food diet was around long before Jenifer made it popular. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried baby food but it tastes delicious.

Baby food diet

Does it work? Well, yes, kind of…

If we just take a step back for a second and look at it in its basic terms then yes, you will lose weight! The reason being is this, you’re basically in a calorie deficit. Naturally, if you use more energy than the food you eat then weight loss occurs. In fact, I can make my own fad diet up right now. Its called the three bowls cereal diet.

On this diet, you can have one bowl of cereal in the morning, one in the afternoon and one before bed. You will 110% lose weight on this brand new diet. Do you know why? Because you’ll be eating around about 600 calories per day.

By the way, please don’t try the “three bowl cereal diet” I made this up to make a point. If you do try it you will be in a state of malnutrition and angry as f**k because you’re hungry as f**k.

Would I try or recommend the baby food diet?

Hell no, I think the diet is absolutely absurd. You’re a full-grown adult eating little jars of baby food. Could you imagine cracking a jar of baby food out in the office for lunch? No, me neither. Not only that, but baby jars are also small portions for small people. Like, really small people. Don’t get me wrong, when I’m feeding my baby I have a little taste and it tastes good. Could I live on it forever? Absolutely not.

Like I’ve mentioned, I have no doubt you will lose weight through this diet but it’s all based on a calorie deficit. Not only that, imagine the cost consuming 4-6 jars a day 7 days a week. See below for other things that are much more effective and will save you money.

  • Personal trainer.
  • Nutritionist.
  • The 3-week diet system.
  • Paleo diet plan.
  • Gym membership.
  • Fridge and cupboards full of fresh healthy food.

Don’t get me wrong, when feeding my baby girl I have a couple of spoon fulls and it tastes delicious. Could I live on it forever? no, and neither can you. For instance, its break time at work and you go to the canteen with friends and you pull out a jar of baby food. Maybe you fancy a snack at your desk?

Furthermore, according to Chrissy Carroll, RD, MPH “By swapping meals for baby food, people are promised quick weight loss. It’s tough to meet nutrient needs while eating mostly purees, though. Experts agree it’s best to leave those for the babies and focus on smaller portions of normal meals for sustainable weight loss.”

I also have to agree, leave it for the babies.

Why do you lose weight on The Baby Food Diet?

As mentioned above, its purely because you are in a calorie deficit. In fact, there is no secret to weight loss. Ok, that’s a lie! the secret is being calorie deficit! It’s a secret because the industry complicates weight loss and want you to buy there new revolutionary product that will “melt fat” with little effort. You know, drink this tea, take these pills, use this one piece of equipment. You get the idea.

The weight loss industry is in a mess when all you need is to consume fewer calories than your eating. Sounds simple right?

How do I know what my calorie deficit is?

Everyone has there own deficit and can be worked out with a simple calculation. Here’s the catch though, a lot of people see weight loss initially and then complain they aren’t losing any more fat. Here’s why, as you lose weight your deficit changes so I recommend weighing yourself every two weeks.

The formula works by using your BMR. Your BMR is your basal metabolic rate. In other words, how much your body uses energy (calories) when resting. Don’t get BMR confused with BMI, BMI is a terrible metric and I personally hate that its used an such a large scale.

See below for the formula…

Men: 66+(6.23 x weight in pounds) +(12.7 x height in inches) -6.8 x age in years

Woman: 655 +(4.35 x weight in pounds) +(4.7 x height in inches) -4.7 x age in years

That will give you your daily calorie intake all you need to do is reduce calories for weight loss. In order to lose 1lb per week, it’s recommended to reduce by 500.

There is one more formula that does just a good a job as the above, but not as restrictive and easier to work out.

  1. Your weight in lbs x 11 = starter point
  2. Your starter point + 400 calories = calorie needs
  3. Calorie needs -750 = target deficit calorie amount
  4. What we recommend instead of the baby food diet plan

What I recommend depends on what you’re looking for. For instance, if you’re looking for fast weight loss that is safe and not to restrictive then id suggest that you go and read the 3 week diet plan. with this plan, you can expect to lose up to 21lbs in just 3 weeks.

However, if you’re are looking for something more sustainable long term then you don’t need a “diet” You need a lifestyle change. This is where it gets interesting, how would you like to still be able to eat that chocolate bar or having a burger for tea?

Well, you can, if you manage your calories like stated above. In fact, you can eat whatever you want as long as you stay in that deficit. One thing to note, you will find that foods that you like will be high in calories.

I would highly recommend downloading MyFitnessPal from your devices app store. MyfitnessPal has a vast library of foods and not once have I put a food type in and MyFitnessPal didn’t bring back a result.

Of course, You could do both as the 3 week diet works on a calorie deficit principal…

Conclusion To the baby food diet and weight loss

In summary, you will almost certainly lose weight by eating nothing but baby food. However, this doesn’t mean you should as you don’t need to go to these ludicrous lengths to lose weight. Whenever I hear any celebrity endorsements it makes me cringe a little.

What celebrities fail to mention is the personal trainers and nutrition experts they have around them guiding them and most likely a Doctor of some kind making sure they aren’t jeopardizing there health long term.

The key to weight loss and the very reason the baby food diet works is that you’re in a calorie deficit. In fact, you can’t lose weight any other way.

Counting calories may sound tedious but it works and after a few weeks you won’t need to count them as you know roughly what your foods have in them. However, if you do decide to start counting your calories use the tool provided here every two weeks. I guarantee that you will lose weight and be able to sustain it.

As delicious as baby food is don’t bother wasting your time or money on the baby food diet.

That was a great post mate on the baby food diet and weight loss. It is odd man what lengths some people will indeed go to, to lose their weight. As you quite rightly say, I don’t think that it is worth going to these extremes. Eating baby food, can you imagine, lol. Oh, the embarrassment would be unbearable. Think, getting that out in front of your peers, you’d never live it down.
